4.1.2.1.2. G-d, Part II
(3/6/09)

1. Many of us need an intellectual basis for believing in G-d. For us, "faith" (whatever that means, exactly) just isn't enough. For us, faith doesn't make sense. And, if we are to believe in this alleged G-d, He and his alleged admonitions have to make sense… (Currently, I do think that I know what "faith" means -- and it's an absolutely crucial concept. Later, I'll let you in on the secret.)
2.
But, for the most part, as we're growing up, no one helps us with this -- we are essentially left to our own devices -- and most of us who need an intellectual basis for G-d end up thinking that there is none, and that there probably isn't any G-d either.
3.
I suggest, however, that such a conclusion is premature, and that there is a substantial intellectual case for G-d -- just that this is the sort of thing with which most of us need some help, and with which no one is helping.
4.
That is not to say that there isn't MORE here (faith and grace) than the intellectual case, nor that the more isn't better -- it is just to say that many of us need this other step first, and even if this step ends up being our only step, it is probably better than no step at all. But mostly, taking that first step may be all that was needed in order to go ahead and finish…
5.
So... if there is someone out there who is looking for an intellectual basis for G-d, I may be able to help. If you'd like to believe but find believing difficult, follow me. Only, be patient … and “don't be frightened" (From Fiddler on the Roof).

6. But, this is also for you guys who already believe but need some “comebacks” for those intellectual snobs out there who don’t, and, who disdain an open mind about G-d -- thinking that they have it all figured out. So, one objective here is to help you believers to bring such people up short -- and to put them in their proper places. They probably aren't as smart as they think they are.

7. For you other guys (you intellectual snobs out there), this is also for you. Consider this a challenge. This is another chance to shoot down one of those stupid claims that the evidence actually supports the existence of G-d...

8. Then finally, it isn't as if I have actually made up my mind about these things. I “lean” towards believing in Jesus, and I lean strongly towards believing in G-d, and even more strongly towards believing in transcendence. But then, I’m not positive about any of these things -- so to follow me is to stick your neck out. And maybe you should be frightened...
